Defeated

The Taliban needs only to survive the next few years, while killing a few Americans every month. Helicopter accidents will do most of that for them. I believe that is all that they need to do and we will cut and run. Americans do not have the necessary will for this war. And the Afghanis think of war as a normal part of life. It can be won still but we as Americans really do not want it that badly.

President Barack Obama called Afghanistan the most important mission in NATO. And during the Presidential campaign he repeatedly attacked Bush for not concentrating on the war in Afghanistan. Afghanistan
being a war he supported from the very beginning. But those early words do not match his latest actions.

My prediction is we will drag this out for two years, not doing enough to win it. In Iraq we gained the support and trust of the Iraqis. And because of that the war went our way. The opposite is happening in Afghanistan, we are going to lose it.

I would really like to be wrong on this one.

You can't lose a war you never started. A lesson for the future?

The Iraq war went our way? That's a new one. I'm not sure there is any point in arguing it, though. In all likelihood, Afghanistan will be more of a ten year plan rather than a two year plan.

If you do not get the citizenry on your side you have no hope of winning in that style of war.

I would love for you to be wrong. But unfortunately, you will be right in that you won't be wrong, and then you can take victory in that you were not proven wrong, but right. Ok, that sounded all too much like Jack Sparrow....I should sleep.

Americans are simply confused. They don't trust any war due to the reasons why we went into Iraq. They want out to save money and their soldiers. Besides, Afgahnistan was never and will never be like fighting any other country.

Many have tried to take this country, all have failed. They have are a people used to dealing with invaders. They've prevailed each time. Simply win their hearts, but not in the same way. New tactics!

Despite what media and the Obama admin. would have us believe, The Bush team gave Obama a comprehensive plan for Afganistan and it's that plan that Obama is claiming as his own and yet not doing anything about. I think they will be forced to operate somewhat close to those goals because they will be forced to but not before somehow placating the antiwar crowd. But the longer he waits the more dangerous it becomes for our troops over there.

And yes I agree. The Iraq war DID go our way.

I think that the Afghanistan war could be won, but it would take decades of occupation. Because it reality, you can't just come in, kill a whole bunch of people, tell them to have elections, and leave again.

Here is the deal. It took 30 years to rebuild Japan and Germany after the war. That is the model. If you don't have the will to stay for 30 years, don't go there or just take a commando team and shoot the people you don't like.

You already know that I don't agree with the war there. We have no business policing the world. Which is what American does full time around the globe. We are creating more terrorists imo than we are curbing/killing them

That says it. In Afghanistan we took the country easily. The problem is we do not really have it in us create a nation where there never was one.

I have people here saying that Iraq is not a good outcome and it went very well these last 3 years. The results are extremely good, yet no one is happy with it. Afghanistan was easer to win the initial war than Iraq. But to build a nation of those tribes. We just do not have it in us

Afghanistan has warded off the Soviet Union and Britain in the past. I think it is a gross underestimation of the resistance there to just believe something can be done quickly. It is one of the areas I am rather critical of President Obama, and believe troop support and intelligence is both needed in a bigger supply.

You forget about the timeframe on the Korean penisula. How long has that been? And we got troops there.
