Just a girl. I am a contrary one, but beyond that I am not so unusual, if that is unusual at all. I grew up on a farm, only 35 miles outside of Seattle, closer to Tacoma. Tacoma is a city I lived in for a while. I am now back at the farm, having fully succeeded in not following any of my parent’s advice. Sadly it was all very good advice I didn’t follow. So here I am, eating crow. Were did that saying “eating crow” come from?

Obama makes is all better

Top 10 Bush Terror Policies Continued by Obama

1.  Special Forces funded:
Since 9/11, funding for U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has tripled, even as its overseas deployments quadrupled.  This Pentagon unit oversees all the military services’ elite Special Forces units, including the Navy SEAL Team Six that was dispatched to Osama bin Laden's Pakistani hideaway.  Under Obama, the command continues to be well-funded even during times of economic problems and budget cutbacks.  The Pentagon is seeking a 7% budget increase for SOCOM in fiscal 2012, and the command is fielding the first of its 72 new MH-60M helicopters, while upgrading other aging hardware.

2.  Military tribunals:  President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder were determined to end military tribunals and try terrorist detainees in criminal courts.  Only when Congress rebelled and New Yorkers denounced the since-revoked decision to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Lower Manhattan, did the administration back down and accept the obvious—that deadly terrorists couldn’t be allowed the full set of rights afforded in U.S. federal court.  Do we really want a committed jihadist to be set free because a Navy SEAL didn’t read him his Miranda rights when pulling him out of a cave in Tora Bora?

3.  Iraq not abandoned:  Obama won the presidency with the help of the anti-war Left by promising a quick end to the Iraq War.  He has stayed the course long enough for the country to stabilize following the Bush surge, which Obama opposed.  Now, with the Middle East pushing out longtime rulers, the new leaders can choose from two models: a democratic Iraq or a demonic Iran .

4.  Gitmo still open:  Obama’s first act as President was signing an executive order to close the facility holding terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay within a year.  More than two years later, he has finally concluded that there is nowhere else to house such murderous jihadists.

5.  Renditions continued:  Obama has continued a version of the Bush practice of renditions.  No wonder.  It was in a secret prison in Eastern Europe where a waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed gave intelligence to the CIA helping to identify Osama bin Laden’s couriers, one of whom led U.S. Special Forces to his doorstep.

6.  Afghanistan surge:  Obama foolishly set a date for troop withdrawal in Afghanistan, but he partially accepted his general’s recommendation for more military personnel for the battle.  Under Obama, the number of troops in Afghanistan has doubled since Bush left office.  Let’s hope the Commander-in-Chief ignores his own deadline and lets the military do its job.

7.  Indefinite detention:  Even while Obama and Holder wrung their hands over how to bring terrorists to justice, ultimately they came to the same conclusion that Bush reached:  There are some detainees who are so dangerous that they can never be released.  At one point, Holder even went so far as to say that he would try hard-core Gitmo detainees in criminal courts, but if an acquittal was reached, he would still keep them imprisoned.

8.  Surveillance maintained:  The Left went crazy over Bush’s so-called assault on civil liberties when the Patriot Act allowed the surveillance of calls from suspected terrorists coming from overseas and permitted the FBI to obtain certain phone records without warrants.  Obama’s Justice Department has given legal authority for the continuation of the policy, with the anti-war crowd voicing only muted concern.

9.  Record number of drones:  Obama has greatly increased the number of unmanned drones used in Afghanistan, an effective weapon against the enemy in rough terrain.  One abhors the persistent civilian casualties, but it also greatly reduces U.S. troop deaths.

10.  Killing terrorists:  Bush said, “Bring ’em on,” when al-Qaeda flocked to Iraq, and he sent intelligence agents and Special Forces around the world to aggressively track down terrorists.  American warriors have continued the long battle with continued success during the Obama administration.  But because the targeting of an individual for assassination is legally murky, the shot into the head of Osama bin Laden would not have happened if the Obama-supporting American Civil Liberties Union had gotten its way.

But, but, its Obama not Bush. This must all be good now right?

I tried commenting on this before but the post disappeared. Here goes again:

Some of these, like not closing Gitmo and not getting out of Iraq, are due to Republicans in the House and Senate not letting him make some progressive changes. That being said, Obama hasn't even tried to end the rendition program, which sucks big floppy donkey dick.

Not every single liberal follows Obama like the messiah.

@GodlessLiberal - Why all the excuse making? You never let Bush get away with excuses like that.

The Commander in Chief can bring the troops home without Congressional approval.

I always ask, "Where's the outrage?"

I'm mean we voted for Barack Obama and got Bush, Jr.

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - It takes longer than a single term to do everything he wants to do, and to have it done the right way rather than the 'let me just ram this square peg in this here square hole even though it doesnt' fit' way.

@striemmy - At this point in Reagan's first term the economy was beginning to BOOM! The military was beginning to turn around from the disastrous Jimmy Carter gutting of it.

Bush had 9/11 which could have caused total economic collapse if it had not been for Bush's quick, decisive action.

Liberals are full of excuses and blame for Obama doing exactly what Bush did. Obama could have changed any one of the above policies over night.

It's time you realize that Obama will not change Bush policy. The reason for that is because those policies are effective.

@striemmy - but the "'let me just ram this square peg in this here square hole even though it doesnt' fit' way" didn't stop him from implementing the healthcare overhaul (which is highly controversial and will more than likely be deemed unconstitutional in court), further the corporate bailouts (that basically stole money from everyone to pay off corrupt and inept companies), "Wall Street" reform (that actually changes the way private citizens are allowed to control their own banking...), implement body scanners at airports (that violate privacy as well as put out more radiation than originally thought).

Not to mention, Bush had to deal with 9/11 as well as the remnants of the bursting of the dot com bubble.  Bush was able to implement each of those policies in his first term, yet you claim Obama can't put an end to them?

Side note, I do, however, give him huge props for finally getting bin Laden.

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - There is a strong distinction between something being effective and merely being in existence. If you have no better solution it does not instantly mean that no better solution exists for a problem but it does mean that you should keep using the current methods until you devise something better. Do you honestly think there isn't anyone working on this in his administration?

@grim_truth - There is a difference between doing something the wrong way for a morally justifiable advancement of your society and civilization as a whole and doing so for something that restricts the growth of the nation you run. Perhaps the bailouts were a bad idea. They weren't his bad idea, were they? Implementation is not one-on with origination. Enhanced security is a good idea, period. If the technology needs to be improved then blame the laboratories and technology manufacturers for being behind on their business, not those trying to look out for the safety of the public of the large.

I think Obama is maintaining a faithful balance of political issues that respects both sides of the spectrum. It would be nice to be asked what we as the public want done, since its their job to represent the public.

@striemmy - Obama campaigned against Bush and his policies.

Liberals raged against Bush and his policies for 8 years.

Now Obama is following those very same policies.

Where's the outrage?

Alas, only excuses.

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - That's kinda horse crap. I build a house for a community of people. The house is a rickety piece of shit. Everyone complains about the house I built, including the boards falling from the ceiling and the complete lack of insulation from the elements. Someone takes the role of leadership from me and patches the house up. It's a shitty house but it's better than no house at all, even while building a new house or making renovations.

@striemmy - Unlike the Obama presidency, the Bush presidency was solid. Great economy. Iraq War victory. Saddam Hussein taken out.

Obama supported all the policies that led to the economic melt down, too.

So the rickety house analogy doesn't work.

@Thunderheart1959 - It doesn't bother you that this balance is in direct contradiction to what Obama promised he would do in order to get elected? It would not bother me if he just admitted that now that he is president and no longer just an ignorant rookie Senator. He has found that Bush was right and he was wrong

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - The Bush presidency was not solid. The economy was literally being set up to go into the shitter during it. Saddam was not the target we were supposed to go after and was deposed, and consequently disposed, as a red herring. There was no reason to go after him that was consistent with the aims of our deployment in that region of the world at the time. The man had been president of that country for a quarter of a century and we hadn't done anything about it until we just happened to be in the neighborhood. Add on to that that we lost face in front of the world by executing him after a bs trial.

1/100th of the Senate is not equivalent to the US President. In fact, in terms of voting power, 66% of the house AND the senate are more powerful than the president. The flip side of this is that any less from either or both is less powerful than the president.. That's what leadership is about.

@striemmy - The Bush economy was set up to fail by Democrats in Congress: Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.

Dodd had to retire from the Senate because of his sweet heart real estate deals.

Bush warned the Congress various times that a melt down was coming.

Of course, the Democrats ignored him.

Democrats Franklin Raines and Jaime Gurelic made off with over $100 million dollars from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as part of the corruption that was at the heart of the financial meltdown of 2007-8.

@trunthepaige - Things change, so plans change. Promises are always void. Did you think that for once a politician, the savior that is Obama, would stay with promises and not change, that for once do what he said he was gonna do? When has that last happened? 1787?

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - I could have sworn I just mentioned presidential veto. Look at his veto record and tell me how worried he was about economic meltdown. He dropped the ball on it. Every piece of legislation HAD to come through him to be passed. He had to hold it physically, and place his signature on it to sign it into law. Was he struck with sudden illiteracy?

@striemmy - Quit blaming Bush!

The economic catastrophe was designed by the Democrats. It's just as simple as that.

During the last 2 years Obama has amassed more debt then Bush did in 8 years. And America's status as an economic super power is now at great risk.

We have rampant inflation now and the rest of the world wants to dump the dollar as the fiat currency.

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Taking the mantle of leadership makes you a de facto attractor for responsibility ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SIGN SHITTY LEGISLATION INTO LAW. How can you not blame someone for signing something that's going to buttfuck this country into law? People blame the current president for such behavior right now, rightfully, so stuff it and let responsibility fall where it should.

You know what was also 'designed' at the time? 12 other measures that were vetoed by Bush.
Actually, that's 100% factually incorrect. During Bush's presidency he took on 5 tril in debt and he WASN'T dealing with the financial crisis DURING a war. Obama just went over 4. You may be able to make that claim further down his presidency but right now it's horse shit.

Wrong.  I do not attach myself to any labels like progressive or conservative, or Republican or Democrat, or whatever.  And I don't attach myself to any group or individuals.  So I am free to say that Obama's use of Drones is illegal as well as immoral.

I don't even consider myself an American because I don't want to be associated with any particular tribe or nation.  Instead I consider myself a Global Citizen and thus am free to make decisions based on issues, rather than individuals.

@striemmy - You need to apply your comment to Obama.

Instead you keep blaming Bush. He's been gone for over 2 years! And the Democrats have been running the government for the last 4 years.

Being liberal means never having to say your sorry.

Liberalism destroys everything it touches but you guys just find someone to demonize and then move on like a plague of locusts.

@striemmy - Adjustments for inflation are just the government's way of lying about the true nature of the situation.

Everything in the economy depends on food and fuel.

And the cost of food and fuel is going into the stratosphere.

Normal, everyday people experience that themselves, as inflation.  Normal people don't need the government to define reality for them.

@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - No, inflation and the adjustment of the value of currency is part of economics. If the government is lying then the value of the dollar is static and normal, everyday people wouldn't get the chance to experience it. If the government is telling the truth, and normal, everyday people do experience it for themselves, as inflation, then the value of the dollar isn't static (which it's not) and you've just told a lie. Adjustment for inflation is real valuation of the currency.

nice quagmire you've wandered into there.
