  • Ad Hominem Tu Quoque

“Bush did it too and you did not say anything then”

Strangely people think that if they can show that a person making an argument has ever been wrong on another subject, that their argument has successfully been countered. It is called (in English) the You Too personal attack.

Its a fallacy because at most you might prove the person making a claim is a bit hypocritical. But their argument likely is still true. If a murderer is a witness to another murderers crime, does that mean the second murder did not happen?

The “You Too Fallacy”(Ad Hominem Tu Quoque) is very popular on Xanga and in politics in general, look for it and ignore it. When in reply to a argument all someone does is attack the person making the argument, and not addressing the argument itself. They are trying to divert the argument away from the facts. Likely because they have lost the argument if they stick to the facts. One would think that if you could prove the statement wrong. Then you would do that, before you would make a personal attack, that was unrelated to the argument.

Obama has been 5 years in office, his party had total legislative control for the two years before that. They had almost dictatorial control for two of Obama’s five years, and have controlled two out of three of the law making branches of our nation for rest of Obama’s presidency. In the five years under our current administration, an administration that had greater political power than I have ever seen in my lifetime. Our nation is being bankrupted by record setting spending. As a solution to this Obama and his party keep proposing budgets that will never balance the budget. Well on the rare occasions they even propose a budget that is.

This is where I’m supposed to ask a question, so here it is.

Can you justify making an argument that diverts from the point that was made. Making the argument about the person making the argument, instead of what they were talking about?

Can you defend the mess the Obama admiration is making of this nation without diverting from the subject?

  • Ah no.  They can’t justify anything which is why they try and divert attention away from any challenges.

  • Bus had nothing to do with the mess our Country is in today, yet we have a biased News media that preaches Bush’s fault.Like in my pulse I just said, look at actions not words.Words are cheap, anyone can say them.Look at the actions, they give words meaning and truth.

  • @notsocoolmonkey did that to me the other day. Here on Xanga the worst name EVER is LoBorn. So once he called me that I knew he had screamed bloody notsocool monkey’s uncle.

@mtngirlsouth is presently moving the goal post on me at another post about gay marriage. We started off with human rights and now I’m having to explain the meaning and purpose of a gun or liquor license.

  • Messes take time to clean up. Obama is doing a great job. We’ve had several years of economic recovery and the only reason why a lot if us aren’t benefitting from it is cuz the Republicans insist on not allowing taxes to be raised on the rich who are hoarding all the profits while the rest of us are forced to suffer. I wish the Great Leader would abolish Congress already so he could move forward with transitioning this nation into a genuine workers’ state in which all the people are completely liberated from exploitation and oppression by the capitalist swine.

  • you have no right to insult this President…because…because you have not rights!!!

  • I just loved in the Romney Obama debates how Obama kept telling Romney that what he was proposing (tax wise) didn’t make sense based on basic mathematical level (“It just doesn’t add up!” blah blah dreaking blah). I was astounded the Romney never said the same thing back to him about the billions of dollars being spent with absolutely no valid recovery plan at hand other than spend, spend, spend and then our people can spend, spend, spend. There’s nothing more American than living outside of your means and having debt now.

I brought up the Ad Hominem Tu Quoque issue up the other day. I didn’t know the Latin term for it previous to this post so thanks! I’m glad you mentioned this issue.

  • *freaking blah. I haven’t the slightest clue what dreaking is.

  • “Can you defend the mess the Obama admiration is making of this nation without diverting from the subject?”

sure. i don’t think he IS making a mess. just because you’re unhappy with who is in charge, doesn’t mean your hyperbole is correct.

  • This happens a lot. Especially with the loudest mouthed Obama lovers. Not just on Xanga, either.

  • It’s all about Conservative overreaction. Is our country doing great? Nope. But is it as bad as Cons say it is? Nope. Bush started this mess and set the tone for absurd government spending. Sure, Obama built on that, but if you weren’t table flipping mad then, you shouldn’t be now. How do you expect to fix a problem in 4 years that took 8 years to create?

  • And the conversation @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - is referring to, just in case anyone would like to read it, began here http://jamskahler.xanga.com/772516420/coming-out-against-homosexuality/?id=1528376213#1528376213, when @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - said my idea was not based in reality.

  • @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - [ Here on Xanga the worst name EVER is LoBorn. ]

You created Loborn. You should be proud of it. It doesn’t do you any good to deny it. We all know it’s you. A tiger can’t change it’s stripes ;)

  • @mtngirlsouth - That is correct.

All you are stating is a personal opinion. You are committing the logical fallacy of setting yourself up as the authority for your own argument.

My argument is based on Declaration of Independence which was based on Natural Law and Nature’s God and is as follows:

In reality the purpose of government is to secure our basic human rights which are endowed by “the Creator.” See the first two sentences of the Declaration of Independence.”

Marriage is the union between a man and a woman which is consistent with the “Laws of Nature and Nature’s God.” Also see the first two sentences of the Declaration of Independence.

Since the happiest people come out of good families it is in the government’s interest to foster marriage.

  • @musterion99 - I haven’t denied it.

But it is an act of raw immaturity and rank stupidity to call someone a name because they pin your ears back during a discussion.

And here on Xanga the absolute worse name possible is “LoBorn.” Nobody on Xanga, particularly the so called “Christians” and their atheist comrades could care less about the effects of bullying, cruelty and name-calling.

  • National Debt is now $16. 787 trillion — look out the window, the sun’s shining!!!!! There are 47.88 million people on food stamps — the economy is getting better. There are 49.99 million living in poverty — housing sales are increasing. For more facts that the liberals can probably put a positive spin on see http://www.usdebtclock.org/

  • I see this fallacy everywhere, sadly.

  • @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - That’s true but sometimes we reap what we’ve sown. I’m glad you’re making an attempt to get along better with people on here, although sometimes you just can’t help yourself. That’s ok. I have a hard time sometimes also of not always being gracious in my comments.

  • @musterion99 - People sow their own hypocrisy. No one else is to blame.

  • @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - Have you ever thought of doing a blog about your days as Loborn on here? Explaining it from your perspective and sharing the reason why you used Denise’s pic and pretended to be her? I guarantee that would be #1 on Top Blogs.

  • @musterion99 - Your appetite for gossip is unbecoming.

  • @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - I’m sorry. I thought it might be good to hear your side of it but I understand that you want to put that behind you.

  • @musterion99 - There is no “my” side. There is only the gossip and calumny produced and relished by the likes of people like you.

  • It is funny because almost every conservative I know blasted Bush for being a moderate and yet they are somehow supposed to be tied to his positions.

  • Oh Lord I am not justify anything or agree or disagree, I am enjoying reading every ones opinions here in your comment sections.
Have a good night and a better tomorrow.

  • If you persist on the question, then you probably don’t understand politics or economics very well.

Lets set political intractability aside for a moment, and assume that Democrats, not only vote monolithically, but can magically overcome Senate filibusters. What magic wand could the Obama Administration have waved to undo the Afghanistan War, the Iraq War, and a pre-existing economic recession?

  • I think it is great that you are doing this: namely, explaining clearly and concisely the logical fallacies which rear their heads far too often on xanga (and in life in general). Not that I have been without sin on the logical fallacy front, of course, but I do believe your efforts will have a positive effect on sensible discussion.

  • @Celestial_Teapot - Lets ignore the fact that they have been in power for just shy of 7 years.

  • What you have said indicates that the Democrats, although having control in the numbers, do not vote on issues as a block as do the Republicans. The Democrats view each issue and determine its merits aside from a Party vote. Whereas the Republicans do not vote on issues but rather as a block and thus vote irresponsibly.

  • @monobeam - As your can see no one likes to be honest about this

  • @curiousdwk - Sorry there is no truth to what you just said. Both parties have the same issues of loyalty. And supposedly all of them want to balance the budget. Everyone of them knows that taxes could never balanced the budget. Revues are increasing every year but spending is skyrocketing. The problem is 99% spending. These are facts not opinions, if you want to be blind and say its the party not in power these last 7 years doing all of this.

Well I do not want to be mean about it

  • @ImNotUglyIJustNeedLove - A blog on that issues as you saw it would be cool. Not a public self flagellation, but your take on it all. There are a lot of reasons for being anonymous. You were a teacher I can think of a lot of good reason for it with you

  • @trunthepaige - Generally, people only care about how they, themselves, see things or how somebody like the Tea Pot can make them see things.

In other words, people see what they want to see and couldn’t care less about reality.

So, I’m getting near this subject. It’s worse than “gay” marriage and adds zero value to any sensible conversation.

  • @trunthepaige - And ideally, exactly what could have been done in those seven years to forestall the recession?

You might as well blame Hurricane Sandy on Obama too. I mean, there’s literally nothing the Obama administration can’t fix, right?
